Nutritional and Lifestyle Coaching is also known as Holistic Lifestyle Coaching.
(1) Holistic comes from the Greek word, holos, meaning “whole” and the word holistic, is defined as “characterised by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the physical symptoms of a disease.”
(2) Lifestyle = everything that’s going on in your life!
(3) Coaching is defined as, “Coaching is a process in which a person called a coach, supports a person or client in achieving specific personal or professional goals by providing training, guidance and support.”
So in a nutshell, Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching is an integrated form of health + wellness + life coaching that looks at all the essential factors that make up your life and identifies the ones to work on to achieve your health goals by optimising your health, happiness and longevity through regular 1-on-1 coaching sessions.
Client Success Story - Shaun, Father of Two, Professional EMCEE, Husband "I am 3 to 4 times more productive at work... I’ve also managed to control my stress and nervous energy through a variety of techniques so, I am feeling a lot better.” |
If we’re going to help you achieve your health goals once and for all we’re going to need to look at your life through the lens of the 10 Essential Elements of Health Happiness and Longevity. What are they? They are, in no particular order of importance, as follows:
1. Movement
2. Nutrition
3. Sleep
4. Breathing
5. Emotions
6. Hydration
7. Environment
8. Social
9. Thinking
Let me give you a couple of examples why these are all important. You may have a perfect diet (2 = nutrition) and go to the gym regularly (1 = movement). However, if you’re only sleeping 6 hours a night (3 = sleep), have developed faulty breathing mechanics from a poorly designed exercise programme (4 = breathing) and are drinking several coffees, juices and a couple of glasses of wine every day (6 = hydration) then, you are definitely going to be sabotaging your health. Or maybe you know exactly what to do but still can’t seem to resist those jammy donuts or prevent yourself from flying off the handle at the first sign of stress. Our emotional state can easily override our willpower and jeopardise our ability to make smart decisions (5 = emotions). Or maybe you are covering all 5 of those bases perfectly but cycle to work every day through polluted traffic, live in a condo surrounded by strong wifi signals, damp and mold or use a lot of toxic cookware and essentially maintain a dirty external environment (7 = environment). Or are you one of the people who live in a busy city, like Singapore, have many virtual friends but have few real friends? In a 2016 study of 300,000 individuals, loneliness was found to be as great a cause of mortality as smoking 15 cigarettes a day1. This thus suggests that connecting with the community and having a strong support network and group of friends has an influence on health and longevity (8 = social).
Another thing that most Singaporeans are deficient of is, Vitamin D - that is actually not even a vitamin but a powerful hormone mainly acquired from the skin’s exposure to sunlight. As a matter of fact, 42% are critically deficient2. Why is this important? Well, sunlight is a natural immune booster and is associated with positive health outcomes including reducing incidences of autoimmune disease, cancer and improving mood3. (10 = sunlight). So let us assume that you already know what you should be doing but you are just not doing anything? Why? Maybe you don’t have a goal, or a dream or a legacy? Do you know what makes you tick? Do you have a nightmare? If you don’t then how, and why, should you embark on a healthy lifestyle journey? Having a strong sense of why is critical to power you not just through the easy times but also the tough times (9 = thinking).
So a Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach is trained to pull your life apart in detail, identify the elephant (or elephants) in the room, and then coach you easily into introducing new permanent habits so you can focus on your goals and dreams and forget about your nightmares! If you'd like a Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach to help you optimise your health and happiness contact us now.
Well that really depends on your goals, motivation and commitment. We’ve found with our clients that we can break the back of 90% of conditions in 4 to 6 months by going through every element and utilising all the tools in our toolkit. Which we think is super quick considering most people have developed chronic illnesses over decades. Of course if you have longer term health and fitness goals, want to perfect your health and longevity (biohackers), or have more serious conditions then, our programmes can be 12 months or longer.
Client Success Story - Cher Fern, Mother of Two, Account Manager, Wife "I have the help and support of my coach to reorganise my lifestyle and work out habits that are adequate for my lifestyle and that help me reach my goals. In this way, I do not feel so overloaded. This is a great investment to be more savvy with my own health." |
Well, for Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching it’s once a week. More frequent than that does not give enough time to introduce new habits and less frequently than that increases likelihood of falling off the rails between sessions. Personal training is a different matter however.
Unlike doctors, Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaches do not dispense medical drugs. Diseases can take years, if not decades, to build up in the human body. Thus, it should come to no surprise that these symptoms cannot be eradicated completely by a 15-minute trip to the doctors. Fortunately, Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaches can be used instead of, or in conjunction with, a medical professional to provide a more frequent, natural and holistic level of support necessary to reverse disease permanently.
For people who have yet to experience any Nutrition and Lifestyle Coaching sessions they may wonder what we do. For starters let’s take a look at nutrition. The 3 principals of good eating are being well nourished, minimising toxins and eating right for your metabolic type (what we call Primal Pattern Diet TypingTM). So we need to look at everything you’re eating on a daily basis, identify toxic foods (both natural and processed), identifying allergenic foods (IgA, IgG and IgE reactions), look at meal times, nutrient density, macronutrients, quality and quantity. So we collect information from you, build a hypothesis, investigate with you, educate, coach, introduce new healthy eating habits and eliminate old unhealthy ones. This does not happen in one 60 minute session! Does this overlap with what a nutritionist would do? Yes but nutritionists tend to only take 1 or 2 sessions to analyse your diet and are often untrained in the other 9 essential lifestyle components and how they are interconnected. For example if your emotions are causing you to self-sabotage the good advice, and they are not dealt with, then the nutrition advice is worthless.
Client Success Story - Daniel, Father of Three, Account Manager, Wife "I like working with Levitise for the sense of relief. The impression that I am leaving the "rat race" for a moment and doing something for myself. I feel calmer...I have lost a little weight as well and decided to stop smoking. If you are considering becoming a client then, go!" |
So that’s just one of the 10 elements. Our 8 point breathing exam can take up to one full session to conduct, explain and introduce breathing exercises if the coach identifies faulty breathing mechanics. Emotional work can take anywhere between 1 and months of sessions again depending on how significant an impediment to progress this is. It really depends on the individual. As an example take a look at this table below to see what you’d have to do to have all these key elements of health worked on individually by different practitioners.
We use several tools when it comes to assessing your health:
Movement Screen
A functional movement screen lasts about an hour and gives us a good indication of general postural alignment, core function, overall flexibility, mobility, muscle imbalances and faulty recruitment patterns.
Logs
We love logs: diet, sleep, exercise even poop logs! They’re accurate, create awareness and are the best way to get a handle on what’s going on. They take a while for the Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach to go through and analysis and this work is done outside of the session with the client which is why most other professionals (doctors, functional medical doctors etc.) don’t use them because they don’t have the time to go through them.
Symptoms
We are a symptoms based practice. What does that mean? Let’s say you’ve been feeling extremely tired and stressed for quite some time with an occasional dizzy spell every now and then. Hoping to finally put an end to this, you decide to go to the doctor. He runs a full health check up to which he finds that all your markers are within the “acceptable range” and tells you everything’s ok. “So why do I feel like crap then doc?”. His typical answer? “It’s just aging”. Well really that’s just plain wrong and there’s no reason we shouldn’t age beautifully and gracefully - symptom free. Here at Levitise, our Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach will truly listen to your symptoms and tie them into your physical health.
Holistic internal health
Yep there’s that word “holistic” again! We look at all the essential physiological functions in your body including gastric function, GI inflammation, small intestines, pancreas, colon, liver, gall bladder, thyroid, adrenals, glucose regulation, cardiovascular (heart & circulation), immune system, kidney, bladder, musculoskeletal system (bone integrity, connective tissue, muscle, nerves), central nervous system, brain and cognition, prostate health (in men), premenstrual health, menstruation, reproductive tissue inflammation, hormone balance, ovarian function, estrogen/progesterone decline (in women).
So if you're looking to reverse weight gain, pain, fatigue, hormonal imbalances, sleep disorders or any chronic diseases naturally and are looking to optimise your health, happiness and longevity then feel free to give us a buzz to find out more.
To your health, happiness and longevity,
The Levitise Team
